ENRICH in Brazil Training on ‘How to apply for ERC Grants’ in Rio de Janeiro

On August 2 2018, the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) in Rio de Janeiro hosted a full day training on the European Research Council (ERC). Purpose of the training was to pass on information to Brazilian researchers and multipliers on how to apply for ERC grants.

The ERC funds ambitious researchers of any nationality with groundbreaking research ideas in all scientific domains. Being part of Horizon 2020, the European Union’s Programme for Research and Innovation (https://erc.europa.eu/), the ERC’s mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe. Until today, seven researchers from Brazil have successfully applied for an ERC Grant.

About 45 researchers and multipliers participated at the training conducted by Liane Lewerentz who works for the National Contact Point ERC in Germany. The participants learned about ERC funding lines, how to apply for funding, the evaluation process and how to budget a proposal. The training included practical exercises on abstract writing, the role of ERC reviewers in the evaluation process and the identification of eligibility criteria. A key element of the training was the success story of the Brazilian ERC Grantee Dr. Bernardo S. Franklin who works at the University Clinic Bonn (Germany). He gave personnel hints and comments on the application process, he spoke about how the ERC grant affected his research career and answered in detail to the individual questions of the audience via videoconference from Europe.

The training also informed about related sources of information for research funding as the CONFAP-ERC agreement, the EURAXESS job portal and the ENRICH hub activities.

Overall, the training was well received by the audience. Many researchers signaled interest to apply for funding or to collaborate in the ENRICH network in the future. ;
